Seeing Tsudai coming from afar, the Buddha said to his disciples, “Do you see Owumuma-no-Tsudai coming over there?” “Yes, he is clearly visible.” “Even if that person were to depart from the world as he is now, he would surely be reborn in the celestial realm. This is because at this very moment, he is harboring a very good mind towards me.”

 

[원본 한글] 쓰다이가 마침내 부처님 곁에 이르렀습니다. 부처님께서는 이렇게 물으셨죠. “흰 개에게는 어땠느냐? 내가 말한 대로 했느냐?” 쓰다이가 대답했습니다. “네, 부처님 말씀 그대로였고, 한 치의 어긋남도 없었습니다. 그런데 드릴 말씀이 하나 더 있습니다. 부디 용서해 주시고 여쭈어도 되겠습니까?” 간절히 부탁드리자, 부처님은 곧 허락을 하셨습니다. “궁금한 게 있다면 무엇이든 물어보거라.”

Tsudai replied, "Yes, it was exactly as the Buddha said, without the slightest deviation. However, I have one more thing to say. Please forgive me, may I ask a question?" When he earnestly pleaded, the Buddha readily granted permission. "Ask whatever you are curious about."

Did you do as I said?” Tsudai answered. “Yes, it was exactly as the Buddha’s words, and there was not even a fraction of a deviation. However, there is one more thing I wish to say. Please forgive me and may I ask?” As he earnestly requested, the Buddha immediately granted permission. “If there is anything you are curious about, ask anything.”

 

[원본 한글] 쓰다이가 허락을 받고 물었습니다. “부처님, 어떻게 같은 사람으로 태어나서도 이렇게 신분의 높고 낮음, 삶의 길고 짧음, 건강과 병, 용모나 성격, 지혜와 어리석음, 부유함과 가난함 등 다양한 차이가 생기는지 말씀해 주십시오. 왜 어떤 이는 오래 살고 또 어떤 이는 병이 많고, 어떤 이는 훌륭한 덕을 갖고 또 어떤 이는 그렇지 못한 건지, 그 까닭이 궁금합니다. 부디 가르침을 주십시오.”

It is said that thereafter, he sincerely revered and served the Buddha.

Tsudai, hearing these words, deeply realized, and with clear and right faith, came to follow the Buddha’s teachings even more. "It is better not to ask about that. For if you hear it, your heart might be distressed." However, Tsudai could not suppress his curiosity and repeatedly implored the Buddha. Finally, the Buddha spoke. "Since you ask so earnestly, I will tell you. That white dog was your father in a past life, none other than Tsudai himself."

 

[완벽한 직역 (Literal Translation)] Tsudai’s heart became uncomfortable after hearing the Honored One’s quiet explanation. “World-Honored One, is there perhaps some past life connection between that white dog and me?” “It is better not to ask about that. Because if you hear it, your heart might be hurt.” However, Tsudai could not suppress his curiosity, and repeatedly entreated the Honored One. Eventually, the Honored One spoke. “Since you ask so earnestly, I will tell you. That white dog in a past life was your father, that is, Tsudai himself.”

 

[원본 한글] 자신의 집 흰 개가 아버지의 환생이라는 이야기를 듣자 쓰다이는 몹시 언짢아져 반박했습니다. “저희 아버지는 큰 보시를 실천하신 훌륭한 분이셨습니다. 돌아가신 뒤에는 틀림없이 천상에 태어나셨을 터인데, 무슨 연으로 그토록 비천한 흰 개가 되셨단 말씀입니까?” 석존께서 차분히 답하셨습니다. “쓰다이야, 네 아버지는 보시를 하긴 했으나 그 때문에 오히려 마음이 교만해져, 그 업으로 인해 이처럼 비천한 개로 태어난 것이다.”

After his death, he surely must have been reborn in the heavens, so by what緣 did he become such a lowly white dog?" The Buddha calmly replied, "Tsudai, your father indeed performed generosity, but because of it, his mind became arrogant, and due to that karma, he was reborn as such a lowly dog."

After his death, he surely must have been born in the heavenly realm, so by what karmic connection did he become such a lowly white dog?” The Honored One calmly answered. “Tsudai, your father did perform generosity, but because of that, his mind rather became arrogant, and due to that karma, he was born as such a lowly dog.”

"만약 네가 전생에 내 아버지였다면, 어서 큰 마루 위에 올라와서 누워봐라." 이렇게 말하면 그 흰 개는 말이 끝나기도 전에 예전처럼 큰 마루로 달려가 자리를 잡을 것이다. 또, "네가 정말 내 아버지라면 금반 위에 올려놓은 음식을 한 번 먹어봐라."라고 하면, 전과 같이 곧장 그 음식을 먹을 것이다. 그리고 마지막으로 이렇게도 물어보라고 했다. "흰 개야, 만약 네가 정말 내 아버지라면 예전에 숨겨 두었던 금은이나 보석의 위치를 알려줄 수 있니?" 그러면 흰 개가 그동안 아무도 몰랐던 숨겨진 보물의 자리를 가르쳐줄 것이라고 한다. 이런 일이 실제로 일어난다면, 누구라도 흰 개가 전생에 아버지였다는 사실을 믿게 될 것이다.

If he said this, the white dog, even before he finished speaking, would run to the large porch and take its place as before. Also, if he said, "If you are truly my father, try eating the food placed on the golden dish," it would immediately eat the food just like before. And finally, he was told to ask this: "White dog, if you are truly my father, can you tell me the location of the gold, silver, or jewels you hid long ago?" Then, the white dog would point out the hidden treasure's location that no one had known about until then. If such things truly happened, anyone would believe that the white dog was his father in a past life.

Thereupon, the white dog immediately came onto the main porch and began to eat the food from the golden dish. Then, it came down from the porch and, sniffing with its nose under the four legs of the porch where his father used to stay, indicated to look there. Tsudai immediately dug up the spot the white dog had shown and was able to find many treasures there. He was deeply overjoyed in his heart, knelt on his right knee, put his hands together, and repeatedly offered sincere praise to Shakyamuni Buddha at Jetavana Monastery. "The Buddha's words contained not an inch of falsehood. The Buddha's teachings are always true. The Buddha's sermon itself is a treasure!" He sincerely lauded the Buddha. He immediately left home and headed towards Jetavana Monastery.

 

[완벽한 직역 (Literal Translation)] Tsudai returned home as the Buddha’s words and asked the white dog. Thereupon, the white dog immediately came up onto the main porch, then began to eat the food that was on the golden dish. And then, coming down from the porch, it sniffed with its nose under the four legs of the porch where his father had stayed, and showed to look here. Tsudai immediately dug the spot the white dog had shown and was able to find many treasures there. He was deeply happy in his heart, knelt on his right knee, put his hands together, and several times with true voice offered praise to Shakyamuni Buddha who was in Jetavana Monastery. “The Buddha’s words had not an inch of falsehood. The Buddha’s teachings are always truth. The Buddha’s sermon itself is a treasure!” He sincerely praised the Buddha. He immediately left home and headed towards Jetavana Monastery.

 

 

 

5. 불교설화 '신사의 집 흰개'에서 느끼셨던 깊은 감동과 메시지를 담아 시 한편

 

희미한 인연, 밝혀진 진실

 

고요한 신사의 집에 흰 개 한 마리,

마루 위를 지키네.

부처님 걸음 멈춰서시니,

그 개 짖음에 꾸짖음이 들려오네.

 

알지 못했던 전생의 업보,

교만했던 보시의 마음.

쌓여진 인연의 실타래가,

한 치 오차 없이 되돌아왔네.

 

어찌하여 같지 않은 삶인가

묻는 자에게 부처님 답하시니,

선한 마음 잃고 자만한 그대,

비천한 몸으로 다시 왔는가.

 

마침내 밝혀진 아버지의 환생,

마루 밑 숨겨진 보물로 증명되니.

쓰다이 비로소 깨달음 얻고,

부처님 가르침 찬탄하였네.

 

교만을 버리고 겸손히 행할 때,

모든 생명 존귀함을 알게 되리.

진실한 가르침 따라 나아갈 때,

얽히고설킨 인연의 끈 풀리리니.
